Defibrilators

Approximately 300,000 people in the United Kingdom suffer a heart attack each year, and half of them die as a result. Many of those would survive and continue to live for many years if they were treated in time with a life saving Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

What is a Defibrillator?
A defibrillator (AED) is a small, safe, simple and lightweight piece of electronic equipment that can deliver an electric shock to treat someone in cardiac arrest. The automated defibrillator guides the operator step by step through a programmed protocol with instructions on a screen and audible voice prompts. The defibrillator records and then analyses the heart's activity and instructs the user to deliver the shock if it detects a rhythm that might respond to an electrical countershock.

Speed
Speed is vital: the quicker the shock is given after the victim collapses, the greater the chance of success. Once somebody has suffered a cardiac arrest, there are only a few minutes in which defibrillation is likely to succeed. The prompt institution of basic life support will buy time for the defibrillator to be brought to the patient, but the quicker defibrillation is carried out, the greater the chance of saving the victim. Ambulances may take several minutes to reach the scene when the paramedics will take over after the patient has been defibrillated and will have a much better chance of survival.

Public Installations
AED’s are being installed where cardiac arrest occurs most frequently ie in places where the public was present. These included the busiest railway stations, airports, large shopping complexes and bus stations.

Corporate Installations
In the private sector, companies, both large and small, realising the benefits of AED’s are now installing them in offices, industrial areas and recreational sites including sports centres for the potential benefits of their employees.

Sales
STS have supplied many organisations with AED's. We can offer unbiased and honest advice if you are thinking about purchasing a Defibrillator. Please contact us for a price list, or would just like a chat to see how a AED would benefit you.

Training
The Department of Health has developed a specification for training in basic life support and the use of the automated external defibrillator. STS First Aid is pleased to provide AED training in line with this specification. This is a competency-based course in which trainees’ skills are assessed after training. The training course lasts approximately four hours for qualified First Aiders and the defibrillator operators will subsequently be reassessed (at approximately six monthly intervals as recommended by the European resuscitation council) to ensure that their skill levels are maintained.
