CHANGES IN FIRST AID TRAINING
As from 1st October 2009 there are going to be changes to First Aid at Work Training.

There will be 2 Courses for First Aiders at Work.

1. FIRST AID AT WORK. Comprehensive Course that covering everything you need to know to be a First Aider in your place of Work, especially if there are many Employees or High Risk areas.
This Course, traditionally run over 4 Days or 24 hours, will now require a minimum 18 hours training and will be run over a minimum of 3 Days instead of 4.

2. EMERGENCY FIRST AIDER at WORK Suitable to low risk environments and Companies with few Staff
This new Course will last 6 hours (1 Day) and will result in an HSE Approved certificate.

Annual Refresher course

The HSE strongly recommends that first aiders do an Annual Refresher course to keep their skills up to date. This refresher course provides you with an opportunity to practise and update your skills at any time during your three year period as a qualified first aider. The three hour course builds on your expertise and confidence by involving you in realistic situations with simulated casualties. Candidates will practise first aid in practical, hands-on scenario sessions.
The FAW requalification remains unchanged at two days.

Q & A Here are a list of questions and answers to help you fully understand the changes taking place:

Is my current FAW certificate still valid?
Yes, up until the expiry date even if this is after 1st October 2009.

Will there be less content as it is now a shorter course?
Recent simplification of first aid protocols, including CPR and casualty movement, have reduced the time needed to teach these and other subjects. The new First Aid at work course will be similar to the current course it will just be covered in three days not four. Training will still be to the same high standard.

Should I wait for the new course?
No, as a company you are required to maintain qualified first aiders in your workplace reagardless of these changes. The current First Aid at Work qualification will still be valid for three years.

When do I have to do a new requalification course?
When your current certificate is about to expire.

Will I have to attend refresher training?
The HSE advises that First Aiders do an Annual Refresher course to keep their skills fresh in their memories. HSE recommends a three hour Annual refresher course at the end of both the first and second year of your First aid at work qualification. You will not need to take the Annual refresher in the same year that you attend a requalification course to renew your certificate.

What is the difference between a first aider in the workplace and an emergency first aider in the workplace?
A risk assessment will highlight the level of risk in the workplace, using this information you will be able to decide what course is required for your first aiders.
Generally speaking, first aiders with a First aid at work certificate will be required in higher risk sites or places with a large workforce or high perceived level of risk; lower risk may only require Emergency first aid in the workplace trained staff, but this will dependant on other factors that a risk assessment will identify. The course content for Emergency First Aid is similar to the current one day Appointed persons.
